ROUNDTABLE MEETING AT UN LAUNCHES A GLOBAL MEDIA AIDS INITIATIVE

TransAtlantic Partners Against AIDS (TPAA)
New York, New York, January 16, 2004

On January 15, 2004, the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan hosted a roundtable meeting with over 20 world media leaders, to discuss ways in which the media can use their resources to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and leverage broader support for the global fight against AIDS.

The meeting was co-organized by UNAIDS, the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Invited leaders included Alexander Dybal, CEO, Gazprom-Media (Russia) and Viktor Pinchuk, Owner, International Commercial Television (ICTV, Ukraine). John Tedstrom, President of Transatlantic Partners Against AIDS, was also invited to attend.

At the meeting, Gazprom-Media committed to lead a new public awareness initiative to fight HIV/AIDS in Russia. CEO Alexander Dybal called on Russian and International media partners to join effort.

Elena Franchuk and Viktor Pinchuk presented "Let's Stop AIDS" - a public awareness campaign implemented by the Elena Franchuk Foundation ["Anti- AIDS"] in partnership with ICTV and other media companies, - and committed to continuing and expanding their efforts [in Ukraine].
