Yana Klochkova Captures Two Gold Medals For Ukraine

Ukraine's Yana Klochkova dominated the Ukrainian sports world in the year 2000 by winning two gold medals at the XXVII Summer Olympiad in Sidney, Australia. She broke the world's record for the women's 400-meter individual medley on September 16, 2000, when she broke the world's record for the women's 400-meter individual medley and won Ukraine's first gold medal at the Sidney Olympic Games. Ms. Klochkova smashed the world record with her time of 4:33.59 in the 400-meter individual medley on the first day of competition after the opening ceremonies. |

On September 19th she won another gold medal, this one in the women's 200-meter individual medley, setting a new Olympic record with a time of 2:10.68. The swimmer from Romania, Ms. Caslaru, was nearly two seconds behind Yana. Yana also won a silver medal in the 800 m freestyle race.
The-18-year-old won every major international competition she competed in during the 2000 season in the 200 and 400 meters individual medley and set a world record in the 400 at the Sidney Games.

At the European short-course championships in Valencia in December of 2000, Klochkova was the only swimmer to master the "Superstar 2000" challenge, which also included last December's European short-course in Lisbon, the European long-course in Helsinki in July and the Olympics in September. She collected a 200,000 German marks ($ 90,420) bonus, the biggest payout in swimming for her efforts. In December of 2000 Yana Klochkova
was voted Ukraine's Athlete of the Year by the country's sports
media. In a nationwide poll, Klochkova edged AC Milan striker Andriy
Shevchenko, who finished third in the European Footballer of the
Year poll two weeks after leading all goalscorers in his first season

Ms. Klochkova is considered one of the early and most successful athletes who has worked in an independent Ukrainian sports program. She started to swim in 1989. Ms. Klochkova has received some of her training in Houston, Texas, and has been supported by SigmaBleyzer, an American/Ukrainian Investment Banking Group, headquartered in Houston.
In the fall of 2000, SigmaBleyzer, ran a large billboard campaign in Ukraine promoting their new media company VOLIA, which runs a major new website, radio station and two TV stations. The advertising campaign theme was, "SigmaBleyzer... Where Opportunities Emerge...VOLIA & SUCCESS... YANA KLOCHKOVA.
The billboard campaign featured action photographs of Yana Klochkova swimming which were taken by Michael Bleyzer, who is President and CEO of SigmaBleyzer. Michael is an outstanding photographer and specializes in underwater photography.
