"Born September 9, 1953; philologist; wife of Ukrainian Group"Helsinki" member Mykola Matusevych; after the arrest of he husband she became a member of the Kiev-based Group.
"Arrested in March, 1989. From the beginning of her membership in the Ukrainian Group "Helsinki", she has been systematically persecuted by the KGB."

IRYNA STASIV-KALYNETS

"Born December 6, 1940; Ukrainian philologist and poetess; wife of Ukrainian poet and political prisoner Ihor Kalynets; mother of a teenage daughter.

"She was arrested in 1972 during the period of mass repressions in Ukraine and sentenced to 9 years' imprisonment and exile for the content of her poetic works.

SVITIANA KYRYCHENKO-BADZYO with husband

"Born October 30, 1935; wife of Ukrainian political prisoner Yuriy Badzyo; mother of two children.

"Since 1966 she and her husband have been systematically persecuted and deprived of the opportunity to work in their professions. She is active in the defense of her husband and finds herself under threat of further repressions.

"Born in 1925; wife of Petro Sichko and mother of Vasyl, both of whom have been sentenced to imprisonment for their membership in the Kiev-based Ukrainian Group "Helsinki".

"She is active in the defense of her husband, son, other Ukrainian political prisoners and imprisoned members of the Ukrainian Group "Helsinki".

OKSANA MESHKO

" Born in 1905; member of the Kiev-based Ukrainian Group 'Helsinki'. During the prepartary period for the Olympic Games, she was incarcerated in a psychiatric hospital in Kiev. A prisoner of the Stalin-Beria concentration camps; mother of Ukrainian Political prisoner Oles Serhiyenko. In 1972 she was named Mother Of The Year by Ukrainians in the USA. She was arrested in June, 1980.

OKSANA POPOVYCH


"Born January 30, 1928; member of the Ukrainian Group 'Helsinki'.

"In February of International Women's Year/ 1975/, she was sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment and exile for her national and religious convictions. She had spent 10 years in Soviet labor camps from 1944 to 1954 for her participation in the Ukrainian liberation movement.

IRYNA SENYK


"Born June 8, 1926; poetess; member of the Kiev-based Ukrainian Group 'Helsinki". Arrested in 1972 during the period of mass repressions in Ukraine. The indictment against her was based on poems drawing on her experiences in Stalin-Beria concentration camps from 1944 to 1954. She remains in exile today, under the 1972 sentence.

OLENA TERELYA with daughter Maryanna


"Born in 1943, physician, wife of Yosyp Terelya, an Ukrainian political prisoner in the USSR. Yosyp Terelya, born in 1943 is imprisoned in a psychiatric hospital for his national convictions and religious beliefs. His wife, Olena is continually persecuted and faces the threat of arrest.

STEFANIYA SHABATURA

"Born in 1938; artist; member of the Kiev-based Ukrainian Group 'Helsinki". Arrested in 1972, she spent eight years of imprisonment and exile for her personal and political convictions. At the time of her arrest, she was expelled from the Union of Artists of Ukraine; after her imprisonment, she was deprived of the right to return to the city of Lviv, where she had lived and worked as an artist before her arrest.

HALYNA DIDYK


"Born in 1912; Ukrainian patriot and longtime political prisoner, died December 23, 1979.

"A participant in the Ukrainian liberation movement and one of the directors of the Red Cross of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. Spent 15 years in Vladimir Prison, and 6 years in various Soviet concentration camps. After her release she provided assistance to needy former political prisoners and those still imprisoned, though she was deprived the right to return to the place she had lived prior to her arrest.

 

 

 

VALENTYNA SIRA with her family

 

"Born July 25, 1944; mother of 8 children; wife of Ukrainian laborer Leonid Siry, who is an active participant in protest actions in southern Ukraine.

"Systematically persecuted, Leonid Siry has been deprived of the opportunity to provide for his family, which is chronically starving. Valentyna Sira and her husband have frequently appealed to the free world to help them emigrate from the USSR, where the father is not able to feed his children. The KGB has included their parents in the persecution. Valentyna and Leonid Siry remain under the threat of forcible incarceration in a psychiatric hospital and deprivation of their parental rights. In 1980 Valentyna Sira was named Mother of the Year by Ukrainians in the USA.
