The Chicago Committee to Remember the Famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine, was founded in 1983. The original purpose was to sponsor an annual commemoration and permanent memorial to the 7-10 million Ukrainian victims of Stalin's program of deliberate genocide accomplished under the guise of forced collectivization of the Ukrainian farmer and actions planned to eliminate the intellectual and nationalist voices in Ukraine.

The Chicago Committee was renamed the Ukrainian Famine Foundation of the USA in the year 2000. The goals have now been enlarged and are:

1. To plan a yearly commemoration of those who perished and those who are living survivors and witnesses of the genocidal Ukrainian Famine of 1932-33;
   
2. To further public awareness of the Famine of 1932-33 through educational programs, lectures, public exhibits, Internet resources, cooperative ventures with educational institutions, libraries and museums;
   
3. To provide materials for use in school curricula and academic research;
   
4. To provide for posterity a variety of documentation regarding the true circumstances and effects of the Famine and most urgently, the proper documentation of survivors' oral histories;
   
5. To support, via the granting of academic stipends or scholarships, scholars (at MA or Ph.D. level) in both Ukraine and/or diaspora, who are concentrating their studies on some aspect of Famine-related research;
   
6. To foster, support and encourage study of the Famine in both American and Ukrainian schools;
   
7. To work to have accurate curriculum regarding the Famine be included in school programs in Illinois, and throughout the nation;
   
8. To seek justice through international venues for the barbaric crimes against humanity perpetrated against the Ukrainian nation resulting in 7-10 million innocent women, children and men becoming innocent martyrs to the idea of a free Ukrainian state and the idea of the dignity and rights inherent in very men, woman and child of the planet, as outlined in the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
