Successes to date

By working in close cooperation with the Canadian organization Help Us Help the Children, "Priyateli Ditey" has been able to play a key role in the delivery of direct humanitarian assistance. Outreach teams have traveled a distance of over 145,000 kilometers throughout 25 provinces (oblasts) in Ukraine. Up to 35,000 children in more than 185 orphanages, 16 hospitals, rehabilitation centers and clinics, have benefited from supplies of medicines, food, clothing, as well as educational toys and materials. Volunteer professionals working with "Priyateli Ditey" have directly distributed over 500,000 kilograms of purchased and/or donated goods with a retail value of approximately over $9,000,000 CDN.

"Priyateli Ditey" served as the nerve center for numerous programs handling a myriad of complex operational issues.

  • Summer camp - The purpose of the camp is to provide an opportunity for youth residing in orphanages to acquire life skills and better develop their potential in a non-institutional setting.

- Over 100 North American volunteers have worked with Ukrainian educators to run the camps.
- Over 1,350 orphan children have participated in the camps program since its inception in 1996.

"Priyateli Ditey" summer camp is considered the “cream of the crop” when it comes to summer camp programs. Much emphasis is given to giving individual loving attention to each child.

The program is very full and dynamic. It includes climbing Hoverla (the highest mountain peak in Ukraine) as well as numerous hiking excursions to other scenic wonders of the Carpathian Mountains. The schedule contains a variety of interesting sports activities such as baseball, soccer, volleyball and golf.

Skill development workshops are activity centered and practical. Topics include Psychological Self, Physical Self, Professional Self, Spiritual Self, Mass Media and Career Forums. Special events include a masquerade party, carnival, craft bazaar, bonfires, talent shows and cultural celebrations.

Deaf children and the physically disabled fully participate in the summer camp program.

"Priyateli Ditey" invites you to sponsor a child for summer camp. The $150.00 sponsorship fee covers room, board, transportation to the Carpathian Mountains, shoes, sportswear, hygiene kit and much more. Each sponsor will receive a photo and letter from the sponsored child. (See below for contact information.)

  • Train-the trainer programs are an important factor in institutionalizing positive change. These seminars and workshops take place in the summer and are held for orphanage teacher-trainers in order to support ongoing professional skill development. There is a multiplier effect when the teacher-trainer in turn introduces innovation in his/her "home" institution.
  • Directors’ conferences - To strengthen effective and on going self-reliance amongst directors of orphanages in Ukraine, "Priyateli Ditey" plays an important role in organizing conferences and seminars for the Association of Directors and Managers of Orphanages. This past summer the Association held a meeting in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine to discuss strategy of reform for orphanages as well as legal reform.
  • Stipend and Scholarship Programs. "Priyateli Ditey" administers sponsorship-scholarship programs for orphan high school graduates. Due to the difficult economic situation in Ukraine there is no support system for the orphans after they graduate from the orphanage system at age 18. These young people are left to fend for themselves in a very difficult environment. For this reason "Priyateli Ditey" established this program of direct assistance to students. Thus far, 14 children are receiving full scholarships in post-secondary education with 7 of them at Kyivo-Mohyla Academy (the Harvard of Ukraine.) Numerous other students are receiving monthly stipends to help defray daily living expenses.

We invite you to contribute to our stipend program and/or scholarship fund.

For less than the cost of a cup of coffee per day, a monthly contribution of $25.00 will help a young orphan have the ability to stay in school and get an education. The stipend is given directly to the student (minus a small handling charge).

Contributions to the scholarship fund are encouraged. Scholarships are awarded on a merit basis. Awards cover tuition room, board, books, clothing and a small allowance.
