Fridtjof Nansen was the High Commissioner for Relief for Europe
during the Russian/Ukrainian Famine of 1921-1923. Nansen was
a very famous Norwegian explorer and international diplomat.
The Nansen organization took many famine related photographs
including the one of the Russian family that was to be shown on the
new Ukrainian holodomor stamp. Most of their famine photographs
were taken in Russia with a few photos also taken in the Kharkiv,
Ukraine area though not of famine victims as far as we know.

This photograph and the photograph of the little girl with her family were
not taken in Ukraine in 1932-1933 and the image on the original
Ukrainian holodomor stamp of course, as we stated, did not belong
on the 2003 stamp.
