SOFIYIVKA PARK SOFIYIVKA PARK
In the ancient Ukrainian town of Uman there is a beautiful park Sofiyivka. The park was created by the owner of the town, Polish magnate Stanislav Pototsky, as a gift to his beautiful Greek wife Sofia Witt-Pototska. A talented Polish military engineer Ludwig Metzel was appointed a topographical and architectural designer and manager of the park construction. All immediate work in the park was completed by the local craftsmen - artisans from Uman.
The location for constructing Sofiyivka was chosen very well - small streams, centuries-old oak trees, natural sources of pure water, accumulation of stone blocks.

From 1796 to 1802 the workers dug ponds, transferred giant granite boulders, created granite and plaster decorations for artistic architechtural structures. In the park trees were planted, both local species and exotic plants imported from around the world.

The park was decorated with marble statues of Greek gods and goddesses, philosophers and poets, sculptures made in Italy and France. Craftsmen from Uman created another small Hellas which would remind beautiful wife of Pototsky about her homeland. Many nameless laborers lost their health and lives creating this miracle.

Uman State dendrological park SOFIYIVKA is a real world class landscape and architecture masterpiece of the XVIII century. The park covers the territory of about 170 hectares. It is rightly called one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.
