Coup and Beginning of Terror, Famine and Violence, Collectivization,
Holodomor, Great Terror, Stalin's Dictatorship, Famine and on and on
Washington, Mar 6, 2003 (ArtUkraine.com)...The first ever showing in
North America of "Not To Be Forgotten" - A Chronicle of the Communist
Inquisition in Ukraine 1917-1991 will take place in major Ukrainian
American centers throughout the US from March through April 2003.
"Not To Be Forgotten" - A Chronicle of the Communist Inquisition in
Ukraine 1917-1991 is a museum exposition featuring 70 large panels that
create a pictorial and documentary chronicle of the crimes of the communist
regime in Ukraine, according to a statement issued by the five sponsors.
The exposition contains never before seen materials from KGB archives and
unique and provocative photographs that document the tragic events of
Ukraine's Soviet past:
- (1917-1920) The Bolshevik Coup and the Beginning of the Terror
- (1921-1923) The USSR Is Born Out of Famine and Violence
- (1924-1931) The Cost of Industrialization and Forcible Collectivization
- (1932-1933) The Ukrainian Holocaust
- (1934-1938) The Collapse of Ukrainianization and the "Great Terror"
- (1939-1941) The Conspiracy of Two Dictators and Its Consequences
- (1942-1952) The Last Decade of Stalin's Dictatorship
- (1946-1947) Famine Strikes a Third Blow
- (1953-1964) The Thaw
- (1965-1985) Bloodless Totalitarianism
- (1986-1991) The Collapse
Also included is a 15 panel display of the Solovetsky Islands, a notorious
concentration camp dating back to the early eighteenth century where
thousands of the Czar's and, subsequently, during the twentieth century, the
commissars' political opponents were incarcerated, tortured and killed.
Accompanying the exhibition will be Roman Krutsyk, Chairman of the Kyiv
City Organization of the All Ukrainian "Memorial" Society of Vasyl Stus.
Mr. Krutsyk, a former member of the Parliament of Ukraine, is the principal
driving force behind the exposition.
The exposition brings into stark relief the historical chronology of the
fate of an estimated 15 million Ukrainians who died as a direct consequence
of the policies of the Soviet Russian occupiers of Ukraine. "The exposition
establishes conclusively the events and facts that must never be forgotten,
if Ukrainians are to establish a civil society based on the principles of
democracy and humanism", said Roman Krutsyk.
According to Borys Potapenko, co-Chairman of the exposition's American
tour: "Most Americans know little about the historical circumstance from
which Ukraine, the second largest country in Europe in territory and
population, emerged as an independent, democratic country in 1991.
"Americans need to be made aware of the crimes against humanity instigated
by the Kremlin rules in Moscow - the deliberate acts that were intended to
eliminate Ukrainians as a nation from the face of the earth," Potapenko
said.
The exposition's co-chairman continued saying, "Americans also need to
be made aware of the unenviable record of the United States government
that, at best, constituted benign indifference and, at worst, complicity in
the tragic history of Ukraine. Only then will the American people fully
appreciate that it is a moral imperative and in America's vital national
interest to support Ukraine in its quest to consolidate its hard won
independence."
"Not To Be Forgotten" is on permanent display at the Museum and Research
Center of the "Memorial" Society in Kyiv. In February 2003, the exposition
was displayed in the Ukrainian Parliament in conjunction with observance of
the 70th Anniversary of the Famine Genocide in Ukraine.
With the financial support of the Ukrainian American community, five hundred
sets of the exposition will be produced for permanent display in all county
seats (rayon centers) of Ukraine in 2003.
The displays in Ukraine will be held in conjunction with the 70th
Anniversary of the Famine Genocide in Ukraine, as a counterpoint to the
observance of "The Year of Russia in Ukraine" and to foster a historical
perspective for the electorate regarding the presidential election in
Ukraine in 2004.
