Ivan said, "Once, when I was cleaning my house I found an old icon which was painted on glass. The painting caused me to remember that when I was a little boy I used to see many such icons in our village. Now it seems that most of them have disappeared. I looked very carefully at the icon and was enchanted by the unusual colors used in the painting. I decided to try my hand at painting something on glass. It seems to me now, that it was a Cossack."

"This was the beginning of my reverse painting on glass," Ivan explained. "It seemed to me at that moment, that I had never made sculptures. I suddenly forgot about the sculptures. I realized that I could express myself much more through paintings on glass, than through the sculptures. Sometimes I would wake up at night seeing total images in my head. I would see everything that I wanted to depict in a new painting, the image, the layout and the colors. Then I would get up, start painting and paint till it was finished. Paintings on glass became my life, " Ivan stated.
Ivan uses the traditional style of reverse painting on glass. Among his works one can see images from the poems of Taras Shevchenko, Lesia Ukrayinka, Vasyl Stephanyk and some contemporary poets.

Joy and sorrow, love for his native land Ukraine, heroes of the past as well as simple people are all reflected in Ivan's paintings. The paintings are his personal expression of life, they are filled with the beauty of nature, songs, legends and the history of the Motherland. Ivan Kolozdra was given the "Recognition of 2001" All-Ukrainian Award in the Field of Humanitarian Sciences, Culture and Arts for his outstanding work.

Ivan Kolozdra, through his paintings, shows and tells us about the life of Ukrainians, their customs, their traditions, their holidays and their everyday life.
