"I Will Not Walk Past
A Beer, When I See It Near"

"Beer is popular in Ukraine and the number
of devotees is on a steady upward curve. And Slavutych is
a brand which, although quite young, has quickly attracted
customers because of its excellent properties."
"Why Slavutych? Because it is a world standard
natural product. No chemical additives or malt substitutes.
People are appreciating its exquisite malt-hops aroma with
a mild bitter touch, and the gold-tinted transparency. These
qualities are appreciated in Ukraine and far beyond its borders."
"Brewing light beer is considered a top-notch
classical technique. It can be stated without exaggeration
that beer can be judged by its colour: the lighter the better.
Sunlit beer is Slavutych's motto."
|

SLAVUTYCH'S General Director Petro Peretiatko:
"I am sure you will like our new beers." |
"How did they achieve a high standard? The joint
stock company Beer and Soft Drinks Combine "Slavutych" has been
in existence for nearly three years (1997), and co-operates with
the well-known Baltic Beverages Holding. This company set up by
a consortium of major brewers in Sweden, Norway (Pripps Ringness
AB), and Finland (Hartwall Group), targeted specially to invest
in former Soviet Republics. The investment in Slavutych is over
$ 42 million. With this money the facilities were renovated and
re-equipped, with machines and technology from the world's leading
breweries."
 |
"A new fermentation shop was installed and
the vats at the heart of the brewery, renovated. All old pipes
were replaced with stainless steel piping to ensure sterility,
and special equipment for washing and disinfecting all vessels
without dismantling them was purchased. The transparency is
achieved by a highly effective filtering system. There are
two powerful bottling lines. All production presses are centrally-controlled,
meaning that every phase is monitored with the highest possible
precision ensuring that the finished product has guaranteed
quality."
|
"We are fully market-oriented, so we strive constantly
to expand our assortment,'
|
saysSlavutych's Director General Petro Peretiatko.
'Zaporizhzhia experts are studying the Ukrainian market. Beer
is a popular drink nation-wide, irrespective of age and sex...The
very existence of a brewery of our calibre is evidence that
the culture of beer-drinking is taking shape in Ukraine. And
it is not coincidence that Slavutych's logo is crowned by
the dvozub, an Old Slavic two-prong sign forming a cross,
symbolising the sun and happiness."

"In his 'Dictionary Of the Living Russian Tongues'
Vladimir Dahl quotes an old saying, 'I will not walk past
a beer, when I see it near.' Indeed, walking past a Slavutych
presents quite a problem."

"The Ukrainian....more than a magazine"

|
"First impressions can often prove quite accurate,
leaving a definite mark on further relationships. The same
applies to beer; with the first sip you feel whether it is
your drink. After that, gradually, the flavour and smell come
to you, so you will always recognise it afterwards for what
it really is. In fact, a good beer is recognisable after the
very first sip. Perfectly true of Slavutych, Ukraine's popular
brand name that wins palates and hearts, even in those who
previously regarded beer as an inferior drink. "
|

SLAVUTYCH General Director
Petro Peretiatko
|
"Slavutych is very popular with Ukrainians and guests
in this country. Time for The Ukrainian to introduce the man in
charge of the company (just in case you do not know him yet): Petro
Peretiatko, director of what is known here as the public joint stock
company 'Beer and Soft Drinks Combine Slavutych'.
 |
"Beer Is One Of The Most Important Discoveries
Made By Man, Ever. Its Production Requires A High Level Of
Culture"
"The Ukrainian: Would you share some of the
tricks of the trade? What makes Slavutych so popular?"
"Petro Peretiatko: Briefly speaking, this brand
combines Ukrainian taste and international quality. Our beer
has everything you find in a Premium class beverage: mild
malt taste and tender hop flavour. I also think that we managed
to achieve a harmony of colour and smell. And I will also
use words to describe our product that, to the best of my
knowledge, have been seldom applied to beer: it is truly refined,
very gentleman-like."
|
"In Ukraine in Soviet times, beer was traditionally
regarded as a second-rate beverage; it used to be sold from metal
barrels on street corners. It was sold lukewarm and not always transparent
enough. We say that beer is one of the most important discoveries
made by man, ever. Its production (and consumption as well!) requires
a high level of culture."
|
"We have changed the very approach to beer-
making, asserting our own company style manifest in practically
everything: organisation of production, management, technology,
bottling, labelling, packaging, and sales."
"The Ukr.: Indeed, your style is also evident
in all those Slavutych commercials; each is moderate, never
imposing, showing real class. Still, it is what one would
call the company's outward look."
"P.P.: Quality must be an integral part of the corporate culture
and manifest itself in everything the company does. It would
be hard to expect good quality with personnel feeling uncomfortable
at their workplaces. Every employee must feel at home in the
company. This atmosphere would be difficult to cultivate with-
out operating modern equipment and securing good working conditions."

|
"Also it would be hard to come to terms with one's
partners unless we produced a diligent performance. Actually, it
would be impossible to convince people to drink bad beer, not in
today's conditions. We want our Slavutych to be a model of culture
in terms of production and relationships, because this is where
real quality and popularity come from."
|

"SLAVUTYCH"
From Zaporizhia, Ukraine
|
"The Ukr.: What do your partners this of this
style? "
"P.P.: This approach is a part of our common
philosophy. From the outset we determined the company's system
of values, with the main emphasis on the consumer and his
interests. Our partners, Baltic Beverages Holding, has quite
an experience in doing business in post- Soviet countries.
We had a chance to receive financial support and to learn.
I think that we are using it to the best advantage, learning
from the best Western European, Baltic and Russian brewers.
|
The Ukr.: A lot has been said and written about
Slavytych and its success. Once an ordinary food industry combine,
having nothing to do with any 'strategically important' sectors,
currently ranking with Ukraine's most dynamic businesses. How do
you personally feel about this?
P.P.: I feel that there is a lot still to be accomplished.
The more you learn, the more you realise that there is a hell of
a long road to what is real knowledge. The better the company performance,
the boarder the horizons we know we have to embrace. We are shortly
to step into the third millennium and we want to enter it keeping
pace with the times.
|
Slavutych's greatest asset is not its unique
technology, although it is necessary, no denying that fact.
However, I would like to stress that the company staff is
an extremely important prerogative of success: a solid like-minded
team made up of individuals, each working diligently and striving
to show progress.
The Ukr.: You seem to have overlooked another
important prerogative: an able experienced director. In fact,
the President of Ukraine acknowledged your personal contribution
when he presented you with the Meritorious Service Medal.
P.P.: Yes, this is a very prestigious award
and I feel encouraged to work on in what is apparently the
right direction. And I am also convinced that the presidential
award was meant for every person involved in or with Slavutych,
and of course it addresses all those consumers choosing our
brand name.

"In life quality and culture is often set by designers,
couturiers, and trend-setters. In business style and corporate culture
is set by the management. However, their concepts and ideas will
remain only superficial, and on paper, unless you can made them
the guidelines of your daily effort. Real culture and intellectual
approach are not only in every Slavutych product; they are in every
word its manager says, in his daily conduct. This and the understanding
of all those economic undercurrents are what makes Petro Peretiatko
a real brewery strategist, a manager acting Slavutych style.
