WALES, UK...A Ukrainian somersault champion broke his own circus
world record in the grounds of Cardiff Castle in Wales yesterday.
Andrey Bezruchenko, a 36-year-old father of one, bounced and spun
between two trampolines, covering a distance of 4.62 meters.
Bezruchenko can now claim to be the world's most successful circus
somersaulter after a busy afternoon - less than an hour previously, he
leapt 4.6 meters, smashing his April 8, 2003, record of 4.52 meters.
All his historic somersaults have been achieved with the Moscow State
Circus. Many of the artists were trained in elite Russian circus schools
which have seen their funding collapse since the fall of Communism.
The company, which is also responsible for the Chinese State Circus,
contacted the compilers of the Guinness Book of World Records with
the idea of creating a category for distance somersaulting.
The recent attempts have been filmed in the hope they will appear in the
2004 edition of the book.
Afterwards Bezruchenko said he was satisfied with his achievement but
did not rule out the possibility that he might break his record.
The Moscow State Circus will be performing at Cardiff's Sophia Gardens
on weekdays from today until Sunday, April 27 at 5pm and 8pm. On
weekends, Good Friday and Easter Monday the shows will be at 2pm
and 5pm.
