The Disaster Zone Chernobyl"

January 2001,pages 72-79

The cover of the magazine says: "Nuclear Error: Focus Returns to the Disaster Zone and Asks: Could It Happen Again - Exclusive pictures, Chernobyl: 15 years later: from Meltdown to Shutdown".

"A silent, long-term killer. The human consequences have been terrible...

'...Further effects may not manifest themselves for several more decades. Dr. Georgiy Lisichenco, a Ukrainian scientist with the State Centre for Environmental Radiochemistry in Kiev, warns that radioactivity in the river Dnieper, which supplies Kiev and much of the country with drinking water and irrigates farmland feeding approximately 30 million people, will be at its highest in 60 to 90 years' time, when radioactive particles trickle into the water system...

'In a UN report on Chernobyl, published in 2000, Kofi Annan, the UN Secretary General, was unequivocal: 'Three million children require treatment and many will die prematurely... The full number of those likely to develop serious medical conditions because of delayed reactions to radiation exposure may not be known until the year 2016 at the earliest. The worst is yet to come."

At the end of the story is the following information:
