KIEV - Our Ukraine [centre-right opposition bloc] leader Viktor Yushchenko,
who is expected to join the presidential race, has said that his main rival
in the country's presidential elections will be "administrative resources
and a smear campaign", rather than Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.
Leaders of parties and factions, which are members of the country's
parliamentary majority, nominated Yanukovych as their single presidential
candidate on Wednesday [14 April].

Yushchenko's press secretary Iryna Herashchenko told Interfax that the Our
Ukraine leader's opinion is that no matter who the authorities' candidate
is, "this person cannot be envied since he will automatically assume all the
negative aspects of these authorities and take responsibility for their
actions and their lack of popularity".
Herashchenko said that Yushchenko's nomination "was announced not during
a democratic forces forum, as it had been declared before, but behind the
scenes".
"This also serves as an indication that the so-called majority needs a new
backbone following the failure of (the country's) political reform. This
majority has no common ideology. It is being put together under the banner
of its single candidate," Yushchenko said.
