KIEV - [Presenter] Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych has become the
presidential candidate of factions and parties in the [propresidential]
parliamentary majority.
This was decided by the heads of these factions and parties at a meeting
today which was attended by President Leonid Kuchma. A statement on this
is expected to be made shortly.
Let me recall that the presidential election is to be held on 31 October
this year.
[Parliamentary majority coordinator Stepan Havrysh] A meeting of the
parliament-government coalition took place today, attended by the Ukrainian
president [Leonid Kuchma] and prime minister. At the meeting, the leaders of
the [majority] parliamentary groups and factions discussed several issues,
the most important of which being the issue of fielding a joint candidate.

There were no long discussions, everybody was unanimous. Ukrainian Prime
Minister Viktor Fedorovych Yanukovych will be this candidate.
The leaders of the parliamentary factions and groups also agreed that the
candidate's major task will be the completion of political reform in Ukraine
and amending the Ukrainian constitution. Therefore, this issue is key to
understanding developments in Ukraine during the presidential election.
It is also important to say that the leaders of the parliamentary groups and
factions and representatives and leaders of political parties which are part
of the parliament-government coalition today expressed support not only for
the joint candidate but also for the key points expressed in the discussions
about the tasks of political reform and reform in Ukraine as a whole.
