The materials for this historic-ethnographic album were collected by Ivan Honchar over four decades, from the end of the 1950's to 1993. Honchar was a renowned community and cultural activist, a talented sculptor, painter, and graphic artist, and a self-taught ethnographer and collector. The historic and documentary photographs from the turn of the 20th century from many villages and cities of Ukraine, arranged and decorated in a unique manner on the large plates, attest to the measure and importance of this unsurpassable work.
This volume contains 160 plates, reproduced on a smaller size than the original. The complete publication will contain 18 volumes and 1500 plates. The publishers expect that the appearance of this unique encyclopedia of the Ukrainian past will be a major contribution to contemporary Ukrainian studies and ethnography. Because the pages of this album are true testimony of the historic and cultural grandeur and uniqueness of Ukrainian heritage, they will give the opportunity for present and future generations to learn about, discover, and preserve their national identity.
