No. 362

To the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma
Highly Respected Leonid Danylovych!
I address you asking to intervene in deciding L.P. Kozachenko's fate.
With sadness I learned from the mass-media that he is still kept in the
pre-trial detention center of the GPO of Ukraine.
L. Kozachenko known as Ukraine's faithful son, professional, public activist
and a Maecenas, has managed to achieve a lot for the development of the
country's economy and the rebirth of Ukrainian Orthodoxy.
Considering this, I ask you to support the members of parliament of Ukraine,
asking to bail L. Kozachenko out, so that he can utilize his right for
public explanation and defense of his position.
Respected Leonid Danylovych!
We ask you, in accordance with a thousand-years old tradition of Ukrainian
Orthodoxy, to show mercy on these Easter days.
With deep respect,
Father Mytrofan
Bishop of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky
The Vicar of Kyiv Domain
In Charge of Affairs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church
NOTE: The Office of General Prosecutor arrested former Vice Prime
Minister for Agriculture L. Kozachenko on March 24, 2003, on the
suspicion of abuse of office while he was a vice prime minister and for
tax evasion in the sum of 584,940 hryvnias while holding the position of
general director of a private business firm - Joint Venture
"Ukragrobusiness" On April 7 Kozachenko was accused of one more
crime, large scale bribery.
